protecting the pope, and the hundreds of thousands of people who plan to see him. good evening, and thanks for joining us. in just six days, we're going to see something like this right here in d.c. pope francis -- massive crowd of fans on the national mall. what you don't see here is the monumental task underway right -- .

>> [ standing by ] . >> reporter: paul bates said they have the enormous task of protecting hundreds of thousands of people who want to catch a glimpse of the pope. >> has there been any specific threat? . >> what i can tell you is this: if we had something specific and credible, we would be acting upon that to disrupt it, neutral size, ensure no harm comes to anyone. >> reporter: part of that protection will be held at the fbi command and operations center. different representatives from various agencies sitting side by side, sharing sensitive information in real-time. >> what will happen here, we'll be tracking our resources. it will be a very active and busy environment, filled with people. >> reporter: in northwest washington, serray chin, wusa 9. ahead of the pope's visit for the first time today, cardinal donald whorl is speaking about a big

saint debate. it will be the first time this happens on u.s. soil, but a handful of native americans say sera does not deserve it. they believe he was part of colonization effort that ravaged american indians. pope knows there's controversy, and today cardinal whorl addressed it. >> i think what we're seeing with sera, historically and all the major historians i read, they see different picture. >> some activists say they plan to protest wednesday's mass when the canonization takes place. >> we have an entire section on our web site and wusa 9app devoted to pope francis's visit. you can visit the list of road closures, scheduled events, and check out the list of items you can not take to the parade. serial murder suspect charles severance will be allowed to introduce evidence that one of his alleged victims was killed by her husband. rumors that alexandria sheriff jim downing killed

his wife nancy swirled around for years, but there was never any evidence that he died three years ago. still the judge says severance can introduce evidence that downing might have killed her. prosecutors called the move gut- wrenching for the downing family. defense attorneys say there's no direct evidence tieing severance to any of the three murders he's accused of committing. a baltimore city high school student is facing attempted murder charges tonight following a fight that was caught on tape, and that video quickly went viral. reporter megan mccorkle from station wjz in baltimore, has the story. >> reporter: the hovering video appears to show 17-year-old shawn johnson knocking a 15-year-old classmate to the ground, and pummeling him in the face again and again. >> when i saw that, i was like, "oh this has gone too far." . >> reporter: the attack happened wednesday during lunchtime inside the cafeteria at frederick douglas high school. it ends with johnson stepping on the boy's head, and walking away as the victim has a seizure, lying in a pool of his own blood.

wjz is not showing that part of >> they just started fighting. everybody started running over there to break it up. >> reporter: according to documents obtained by wjz, the incident began when johnson asked the victim did he steal the visor from his football helmet. when the victim continuously denied it, authorities say johnson attacked. school officials say staff inside the cafeteria intervened in the beatings right away. the victim was rushed to shock trauma with a concussion, facial fractures and a fractured nose. the video of the beating now going viral on face. >> that could have been my son who was attacked like that. >> reporter: many parents at the school feeling the same way it's ridiculous. kids at school fighting, sending each other to the emergency room. >> reporter: now one student faces serious jail time for this brutal attack. >> well the suspect is being held without bail. the victim has reportedly been released from the hospital. and we are following breaking news in prince

george's county. sky 9 over the scene of a vehicle antour bus crash. now, this is located in the 9600 block of fort meade road in laurel. now, someone inside the car is trapped. police say medics are going to rush that patient to a nearby hospital. there were 59 people on board the bus. none of them were hurt. but quite a tragic situation. this is the 9600 block of fort meade road in laurel. a city cop has been charged with assault. police say other officers took a prisoner who was already in restraints. the alleged incident happened last september, but details are just now ngcomi out. police say the accused officer was helping two bondsmen take control of a suspect who was a flight risk. police claim he grabbed the suspect and assaulted him, even though they say the suspect never tried to escape. the officer is is a 24-year vet with the force. he's been on administrative duty since last year: new this week, deputies in frederick county, maryland, are installing motion- activated hidden cameras on trails in the vast

frederick watershed. it is the latest effort to catch a person burying booby traps in those trails. the traps appear to slash bike tires. mountain bikers fear they're the target. frederick county sheriff todd jenkins said he's putting an end to it. >> we're looking at not so much what's happening in the past, but going forward, the types of things we're finding up there, the people we see coming and going. we're going to do the best we can to identify a suspect, whether it's a hunter trying to keep a biker out or the bikers trying to keep the hunters out. >> this is the latest episode in a series of booby-trap in the watershed dating back to at least 2013. so far no one has been hurt. no serious injuries, but an incredible scary scene after a school bus plunged into a florida pond. it happened just outside tampa and hillsborough county. within minutes of this accident, rescue crews accounted for all students and the bus driver. here's one student describing what happened. >> when the bus started

accelerating everyone started screaming. when it landed in the lake, everyone started crying. some climbed out of the top windows, and i -- i got out of the bus first, and i started pulling kindergartens out of the bus. >> no word yet on what caused that bus to end up in the water. republican presidential candidates are back on the campaign trail today, hoping to capital size on last night's debate. right now donald trump is holding a town hall meeting in rochester, new hampshire. he did a lot of talking last night during cnn's three-hour gop debate. nearly 3 million people tuned in, a record for cnn. 1 million people tuned into the first gop debate on fox news. many of the candidate took shots at trump, including carli fiorina. here's what her response was to trump's jab about her looks. >> i think women across this country heard very clearly what mr. trump said >> i say she's got a beautiful face, and i think she's a beautiful woman. she was on point, and she was

the fast-moving water swept away a couple of cars packed with people. one child is still missing. searchers found two victims when they combed through what's left of homes burned by the california wildfire, bringing the total number of people killed to five. the fires have destroyed more than 8,400 homes. officials are looking into whether a power line started one of those fires. the wildfires have forced thousands of people to evacuate.

hundreds of them are camping out in many cities like this one. they have hot meals, private showers, and portable toilets, but some residents say they've had enough. they're ready to go home, and say they're willing to take matters into their own hands. >> those middletown boys are going home with the highway patrols. they better bring the national guard, because there's about 30 of us packed up, and we're all boys, we're leaving. >> that home is still substantial doubting. sheriff's deputy escorted him yesterday, but only about 15 minutes. residents in his city are not allowed to go back on their own. at least ten people are dead following last night's powerful earthquake in chile. the 8.3 magnitude quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks. an estimateed 1 million people were forced out of their homes last night, although many did return this afternoon. a quarter of a million people lost power, and the quake was so powerful, it was felt in buenos, aires, argentina. that earthquake triggered advisories in california and hawaii. officials have canceled both of them. they asked people to stay off

accurate. so, you know, there's two things with this dry weather, because we need the rain; but you know, for many folks, they like being able to go outside and enjoy it. >> it is nice, and the water table is still fine. that's actually the key. so we're going to get some showers in here eventually. don't see any really the next 5 days, any consequence. let's talk about the dry weather. if you add up the rainfall we've had so far for the month, about a quarter inch. so we're over an inch and a half behind for september. but the good news is you see this plus sign, we're still almost 5 inches above for the year. now you go back farther into august, the last 37 days, we've only had 8,5000ths. that's a fairly dry streak the right now it's 80. dew point's still in the 0s, which makes humidity comfortable, 48%, winds out of the south at 9. still cool enough tonight to rest the ac. not as cool as it has been. remember, monday and tuesday morning, we're in the 0s. we'll see 50s in the burbs. in fact, bus stop temperatures, 56, about 76. then a bit warm tomorrow, but

still nice. humidity still in check. the weekend looks dry. outdoor plans are safe. saturday will be warmer than sunday. the cool front goes through late saturday night. unfortunately it's going to go through dry. 10:00 tonight, 60s to low 7 0s. maybe 69 in guinnessburg, 68 in frederick, 67 in culpepper. 70 in cumberland. by morning, most folks in the 50s, 58 gaithersburg. wheaton, almi, upper 50s. fairfax, manassas, leesburg, upper 50s. by 9:00, we're near 70 with sun. by afternoon, fantastic, low to mid-80s. even 84 in romney. still a gorgeous, gorgeous day. to put things in perspective, this is a little warmer than average. our average high 79, 80. we're looking at temperatures in the mid-, upper 80s tomorrow. by 6:00, though, we fall back in the low 80s, and friday night is going to be just about perfect if you want to do something outside. it will be comfortable, but not

too cool. 70 in -- 9:30, 68 frederick, about 71 in leesburg. so for tonight, looks like this, clear and cool again. open the windows. 56 to 66 with light winds. lows after tonight, we think we'll be 5 in rocksville, 58 in laurel and college park, maybe 57 also in billy, but 56 in manassas and haymarket, and also leesburg. so all the day planner, we're right around 70 at 9:00, 78 at 11:00, 83 at 1:00, purr sun. so warm and nice on saturday, 86. in fact 86 tomorrow, 86 on saturday. i got some clouds here, a little shower indicate late at night. front goes through. i don't think we'll see anything, maybe a sprinkle. it will lower temperatures, though, for sunday. temperatures near 80 on sunday. so warm for the turps, upper 80s, warm for d.c. united saturday night. and not quite as warm at fedex on sunday. next 7 days, we got showers on monday and tuesday and wednesday for the pope. i don't think this is going to be a huge deal.
